Client's Vision + Creative Distance!

On any project there is a give and take between designer and client. The visual aspect of a project is the province of the designer. He presents his ideas to solve a unique client problem. The client then accepts or rejects the visual design he hired the designer to create. Within limits the designer makes changes and corrections some cosmetic and others based on the message the client is sending to his customers. The crux of the problem for the designer is matching the taste level of the client to designs they are comfortable with, and also that the designer finds "professionally" satisfying. Many times the client will throw in as much noise as possible to feel they are getting their moneys worth. The designer must communicate, educate and edit a project so both sides of the table agree on the finished idea. To make a successful partnership for both, it is important for the designer to have "creative distance". The designer has to be able to view his work objectively and be thick skinned to criticism. He has to be willing to surf his ideas on the waves of client antagonism and indifference to visual creativity. It is a balancing act for any designer to master.Ultimately, the client is paying for his vision, but a good designer guides a client to the best solution to his communication problem. Too many changes the client will learn, costs!
